Mr. President, Atomenergie ist nicht nur eine innenpolitische Frage

Offener Brief an Präsident Obama

Dear Mr. President,

we could not believe it, when we heard about your plans to build new nuclear power stations in the United States of America. We were really shocked that a reasonable and modern thinking president decides to turn back to this old fashioned way of producing energy.
From the production to the usage to the storage of uranium there is a high risk of contaminating the environment that we humans depend on.
Nowhere on this earth there is a place where you can store the nuclear waste safely.
Dear Mr. President, please consider the costs of the so called final disposal.

Nuclear Power is not the adequate measure to fight climate change!
We stand with friends of the earth in the US who say:“To ensure that global warming doesn’t lead to catastrophe, we have to act with a sense of urgency and begin reducing greenhouse gas emissions now. Otherwise, if emissions continue to grow over the next few years, natural feedback cycles could be triggered, moving us past a point of no return.
Constructing new nuclear plants takes at least 10 years. A large-scale transition to nuclear power would take decades—time we don’t have to spare. Other solutions, including switching to wind and solar power, and using energy more efficiently, can be adopted much more quickly. […] The nuclear industry is asking for tens of billions of dollars of additional subsidies, even though, at an estimated 6.7 cents per kilowatt hour, nuclear power is substantially more costly than wind power, which can now be derived for 3.5 to 4 cents per kilowatt hour.“

Real climate action affords the transformation from a finite energy system to a renewable one.
Real climate action affords energy efficiency.
Real climate action leads to a win- win situation for human being, nature and environment!
Dear Mr. President, nuclear power is not only a national issue. By your announcement to build new nuclear power stations in the US you are hindering our fight for a clean energy system in Europe.
By promoting nuclear in the US you promote the old fashioned people here in Europe that want to keep and invest in nuclear power stations.
By promoting nuclear power in the US you promote the powers in Iran that want to engage into nuclear power.
By promoting nuclear power in the US you make this world a less peaceful one.

Dear President, please be reasonable. Don’t build new nuclear power stations in the US.

Hopefully and exited for an answer,

Young Friends of the Earth Germany
